News Flash: I’ve Changed My Mind
It’s not easy being green. Are you familiar with that sweet song sung by one of my favourites, Kermit THE Frog? Well, for me the title would be “It’s not easy liking green”. And while Kermit the Frog may not find this worthy of a news report, I’d like to share this with you just the same.
As much as I adore Kermit, green has always been on the bottom of my chosen colour list. Any green in my wardrobe is definitely in the blue/green family. I don’t even consider shades of green for decorating. It’s like I crossed green off the list of possibilities a long time ago. Maybe just to narrow my choices. Telling myself, “I don’t like green”, on repeat.
Imagine my surprise when I started being drawn to green. I suppose that’s really no big revelation because I am working with artificial plants, after all. It is rather hard to avoid green. It’s more than that though.
I’m breaking free of my self-imposed rules. That’s the big news. I am allowed to like green. And re-discover green. And design with the rich, vibrant shades of green. Both in the Studio and beyond. Sweet freedom!
Nature has provided us with a gorgeous palate of colour and texture. We humans have made up rules, sometimes wacky rules, about how we can or should use those colours. (And don’t even get me started on the rules about colour in décor!) I’m heading back to the school of Mother Nature and embracing my colour stories from her lessons.
So for today, I’m acknowledging my part in the colour-rule making and allowing my creativity to bloom. And it feels nice. I like this new friend, Green, and I’m excited to get to know her better. Maybe you’ll even catch me wearing shades of green on days other than St. Patrick’s Day.
If you need a bit of permission to loosen the rules – here it is. I say go for it. Let me know what new colour friend you are making. I’m curious to know. And I think Kermit would be proud of us, don’t you?
The creative genius, Jim Henson, with Kermit the Frog. Brilliant and inspirational. Always
