Post Event Thoughts
I’m new at this…
How are we feeling about trying new things? Does that come easily to you or do you have to give yourself a big ol’ pep talk to be a beginner? Starting this Crafty Chipmunk adventure has involved many—MANY pep talks from myself and from those around me. Jumping into the deep end of “new things” at age 57…well, we’ll discuss that another time. Today I’m thinking about those of us that have chosen to create and share our creations and how much vulnerability that really takes!
This past weekend I attended my second vendor market. Let me clarify that – attended AS a vendor. I’m an avid shopper of markets but the view is different from the other side of the table. I had a wonderful time soaking up this new experience and the creative energy of the day! After the unpacking and after my feet and back stopped hurting, the two words that summed up the day were generosity and courage.
My friends and family are incredibly supportive, not just at this show, but through every step of this journey. Everything from helping load, unload, and reload the van (this time in the rain) to checking in and cheerleading. I’m so very grateful for all it. I’ll tell you, it’s especially helpful when I need to shut-out the inner critic in my head. I realize that not everyone has that same kind of support when trying something new, and I have asked myself, would I still do this without it? The answer is yes. Maybe a bit differently, but yes. The joy of fulfilling your own dreams is a sweet reward.
The organizers of this particular market were a generous, powerhouse duo. That energy was evident in their passion for giving us a space to conduct these small business ventures. The sharing that went on between vendors was also a gift. The ideas, encouragement, and tips that were exchanged had a value you cannot put a price on. For me, I was touched by the kind comments and feedback from the individuals that stopped by our booth. My sister and I were humbled by the sincerity of those that admired our work. It’s true, kind words have a lasting impact. And when people spend their hard-earned money on your product? Well, that I will never take for granted.
When you put your heart into your creations, it can be a very raw experience to lay them out on a table. Of course, when they are made with a business purpose in mind and you expect to sell them, logically you understand that your things will be “out there”. In that room though, I saw all ages of creative souls showcasing their products and passions. It takes so much courage to navigate the thousands of steps in order to get from idea to product to vendor show. The pride of their craft and anticipated excitement was obvious. I felt right at home in that space.
If you are in the “trying something new journey”, please, keep going. Know that doubt is part of the creative process so when it shows up, say hi to it and get back to focusing on enjoying your work. And if you ever need a pep talk about working a dream, send me a message and say “can we talk about new stuff for a bit”? I’ll be in the Studio prepping for Vendor Market #3.
